Brycchan Carey

Welcome to Brycchan Carey's Website

Welcome to my website and please feel free to explore. I have a large and growing selection of pages dedicated to the literature, history, and culture of eighteenth and nineteenth-century Britain. In particular, I have pages dedicated to black British writers of the period, such as Ignatius Sancho, Olaudah Equiano, and Ottobah Cugoano, as well as resources for the study of slavery, abolition, and emancipation. There is a growing collection of biographies of British Abolitionists, and also a collection of otherwise difficult-to-obtain e-texts, in particular, poems about slavery. You will also find images and opinions about Cornwall, my childhood home, Gamlingay, my current home, and pages reflecting other personal interests (and obsessions). Highlights of this site follow below. Click here for a complete index or follow me on Twitter for regular updates and to read my thoughts on a host of topics (you can see my most recent tweets at the bottom of this page).

I have been working on the topic for over fifteen years now, so as you'd expect much of my website is concerned with the history and literature of slavery and abolition, and with black writers in eighteenth-century Britain. Who is this Brycchan Carey, anyway?

I am a Reader in English Literature at Kingston University in Surrey, United Kingdom. ( A "Reader" is equivalent to the international grade "Associate Professor".) I am a specialist in the literature and culture of the eighteenth century, and I work primarily on empire, slavery, and abolition. My early work was on antislavery rhetoric, but in recent years I have mostly worked on the relationship between literature, culture, and place, particularly in relation to the British slave trade. As well as organising the annual Literary London conference, I have also worked on the way slavery was experienced locally in London, Guernsey, Cornwall, Barbados, and Pennsylvania. My latest book, From Peace to Freedom: Quaker Rhetoric and the Birth of American Antislavery, 1658-1761 is about the development of Quaker antislavery thought in the British American colonies, and will be published by Yale University Press in 2012. I am also writing another book on the relationship between slavery and environmental catastrophe. And yes, my name is spelled (or spelt) incorrectly. The proper Welsh spelling is "Brychan". If you have nothing better to do, why not take a look at the books I've written and edited or, if you're really keen, you could read my CV.
